The city's growth, with its new buildings, wide streets, and infrastructure projects, has also brought a silent consequence: a drastic reduction in green spaces. Trees have been replaced by concrete, and the increasingly intense heat has become a constant companion on the hottest days. Unprotected sidewalks, heat islands, and a lack of shade have changed the way we live and move around the city.

The feeling of thermal discomfort is just one facet of the problem. The absence of urban vegetation also compromises our health, our well-being, and even the way we interact with the space around us. Trees, often ignored in urban planning, are fundamental allies: they reduce ambient temperature, improve air quality, promote rainwater runoff, and create pleasant refuges amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

But the burning question is: what can we do in this situation?

Caring, planting, protecting

As citizens and part of this urban machinery, we have an important role to play in this process. Supporting and participating in tree planting initiatives is a first step. We can—and should—promote more green spaces, whether on sidewalks, squares, private gardens, or schools. It is also essential to advocate for public policies that prioritize tree planting in urban projects, and to participate in initiatives that promote the conscious and sustainable use of public spaces.

Trees are not just decorative elements. They directly influence our quality of life, making streets cooler, parks more welcoming, and cities healthier. Green spaces are also places for socializing, leisure, and relaxation—and their presence can transform entire neighborhoods.

A prime example: Américo Renné Giannetti Municipal Park

Fortunately, Belo Horizonte still has true oases in the middle of the city. The Américo Renné Giannetti Municipal Park is one of them. Located in the heart of the capital, this environmental and cultural heritage site celebrated its 126th anniversary in September 2023, being part of the history and daily life of generations of Belo Horizonte residents.

Photo: Vander Bras

Designed in the late 19th century, the park is home to springs, rich biodiversity, centuries-old trees, and an extensive green area that makes a difference to the temperature and air quality in the central region. Furthermore, it provides the population with a space to walk, practice physical activities, meet friends, or simply breathe in some nature amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life.

More than just a tourist attraction or a leisure space, the Municipal Park is a living reminder of the importance of maintaining and valuing our urban green areas. Its existence reinforces how it is indeed possible to harmonize city and nature.

An invitation to action.

Urban green spaces need to be cultivated — literally. Planting a tree, caring for a park, respecting public green areas, and encouraging their expansion are simple actions that make a big difference. More than improving the climate and the environment, these actions build a more welcoming city, better prepared for the challenges of the future.

Belo Horizonte can be cooler, more pleasant, and greener — if everyone does their part. After all, the city where we live is also a reflection of the care we take of it.

Ao caminhar pelas ruas de Belo Horizonte, é impossível não notar como a paisagem urbana tem se transformado.
