The absence of oxygen in these compacted spaces triggers a process called anaerobic decomposition, in which microorganisms that do not depend on oxygen take center stage. The result? The generation of greenhouse gases, especially methane (CH₄), a gas with a global warming potential up to 25 times greater than that of carbon dioxide (CO₂).

Composting emerges as a powerful and simple alternative. By exposing waste to oxygen, this process promotes the activity of aerobic microorganisms, which transform what was once garbage into stable and nutritious compost for the soil, without releasing methane along the way. It is a natural and efficient way to reduce emissions and, at the same time, enrich the soil with humus — a dark, nutrient-rich substance capable of boosting plant growth and restoring degraded urban ecosystems.

An everyday choice with big impacts.

Composting is more than just an environmental gesture: it's a strategic action in the face of the climate crisis. Instead of contributing to the emission of gases that accelerate global warming, composting transforms food scraps and plant waste into valuable fertilizer, strengthening the sustainability chain from the base—the soil. By returning to the earth what came from it, a virtuous cycle of nutrients is closed, and space is opened for a more conscious way of life.

During composting, waste undergoes a natural oxidation process, in which the presence of air is fundamental. This prevents the generation of methane and other toxic byproducts, such as leachate, and also promotes microbial biodiversity. The final compost not only improves soil fertility but also its water retention and carbon capture capacity—an essential resource for cities that wish to mitigate the effects of climate change.

throwing food leftovers in garden compost pile. recycling organic kitchen waste

How can you participate?

Composting can start simply, indoors, with fruit scraps, vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and dry leaves. Setting up a home composter is accessible, requires little space, and can become a transformative habit. Furthermore, learning to better preserve food and reduce waste also contributes to decreasing the amount of organic waste sent to landfills.

Sharing knowledge is also a powerful form of action. Talking about the benefits of composting and the negative impacts of anaerobic decomposition broadens the reach of this practice and encourages more people to get involved. Change starts on a small scale, but the collective impact is immense.

The Campinas experience: from pruning to certified fertilizer.

While composting already represents a relevant environmental solution at the domestic level, on an urban scale it becomes a strategic instrument of public management. This is demonstrated by the experience of the city of Campinas (SP), which has been operating the Green Composting Plant for about two years — an initiative of the municipal administration aimed at valuing organic waste and generating high-quality fertilizer.

Taquaral Lagoon in Campinas, view from above, Portugal Park, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The plant receives approximately 100 tons of waste daily, including sludge from the Sanasa treatment plant, pruning debris, and urban tree branches. Soon, fruits and vegetables discarded at Ceasa will also be part of the operation. This waste undergoes an aerobic composting process, resulting in a nutrient-rich compost, currently used in tree planting, urban landscaping, and agronomic experiments conducted by the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC), which is responsible for analyzing and certifying the fertilizer.

With 50,000 tons of compost already stored and official registration from the Ministry of Agriculture in hand, Campinas is preparing to begin marketing the product, offering it to rural producers and further expanding the environmental and economic benefits of the initiative. Currently, the plant's operation represents a monthly savings of R$1 million for the municipality, by preventing waste from being sent to landfills and reducing final disposal costs.

Located on the Santa Elisa Farm, in an area of 17 hectares, the Usina Verde (Green Power Plant) is the result of a collaboration between the Municipal Department of Public Services, Sanasa (water and sanitation company), Ceasa (wholesale market), and IAC (Agronomic Institute of Campinas). It is a concrete example of how public policies, integrated management, and nature-based solutions can transform environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable development.

Todos os dias, toneladas de resíduos orgânicos saem das cozinhas brasileiras rumo a aterros sanitários, onde a promessa de decomposição se cumpre em um ambiente silenciosamente problemático.
