Applied Sustainability: When Practice Transforms Territories – Case Studies from Our Clients

Sustainability, when considered beyond mere rhetoric and applied in a real way, becomes a powerful tool for social and environmental transformation. At Ecominas, this is one of the pillars that guides our work: promoting actions that respect the regenerative capacity of ecosystems, whether in the countryside or the city. But to make this concept less distant from everyday life, we highlight below real initiatives from clients who make sustainability a daily practice. Projects that inspire, transform, and deserve recognition.

Sesc Mesa Brasil: fighting hunger and waste

“"On one side, hunger; on the other, waste." It is with this simple yet powerful logic that Sesc conducts the Mesa Brasil program, connecting donor companies with social institutions that serve vulnerable populations. Supermarkets, bakeries, and rural producers donate food that has lost its commercial value but is still fit for consumption. This food reaches thousands of people who depend on this network of solidarity.

Beyond just donation logistics, the program also invests in capacity building through educational initiatives in nutrition and social services. The goal is to strengthen the work of social organizations, encouraging conscious practices regarding food utilization and health promotion.

Present throughout Brazil since 1994, Mesa Brasil has been operating in Minas Gerais for 20 years with four fixed units and, since 2023, with a new base in the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys. During this period, more than 40 million kilos of food have been redistributed — an undeniable impact. Recognized by The Global FoodBanking Network, the program is now the largest food bank network in Latin America, proving that the union between civil society, companies, and public institutions can generate large-scale transformation.

UniBH Buritis: animal care as an extension of social responsibility

At the UniBH Veterinary Hospital, part of the Ânima Group, animal care goes beyond technical training: it's also a commitment to social inclusion. In partnership with the Belo Horizonte Public Veterinary Hospital (HPV-BH), the teaching hospital offers free care for dogs and cats belonging to vulnerable families.

When a case requires specialized treatment, patients are referred to UniBH, which assumes responsibility for their care, reinforcing the role of education combined with social commitment. This initiative brings the university closer to the community and simultaneously promotes animal health, excellent professional training, and social justice. It is sustainability translating into empathy, acceptance, and responsibility towards the surrounding environment.

Viashopping Barreiro: sports, culture, and a sense of belonging in the urban space.

In the Barreiro region of Belo Horizonte, a beach tennis court is transforming the landscape beneath the Viaduto das Artes (Arts Viaduct). The installation, conceived and sponsored by ViaShopping Barreiro, is more than just a space for sports: it's a symbol of urban renewal and the promotion of civic engagement.

With free classes for children and teenagers from the community, the project offers opportunities for leisure, education, and social inclusion. At night, the space is open for rent, generating resources for its maintenance and ensuring continuous access to sports practice. The initiative also includes a complete structure with bathrooms, showers, and support areas, demonstrating care for the well-being of those who frequent the place.

Present in the region for over 18 years, the shopping center acts as a development agent. Whether through job creation, urban modernization, or projects like this one, its presence goes beyond commerce: it's a link with the community. The opening of the sports court at Viaduto das Artes reinforces this commitment, in a location that already carries the mission of promoting art, culture, and now also health and sports.
